Purpose

The California Song-Brown Healthcare Workforce Training Program provides grants to support certified nurse midwifery (CNM) and licensed midwifery (LM) training programs in California.

Priority will be given to programs with demonstrated success in:

  • Graduating individuals who practice in medically underserved areas
  • Enrolling members of underrepresented groups in medicine to the program
  • Locating the program's main training site in a medically underserved area
  • Operating a main training site at which the majority of the patients are Medi-Cal recipients
Eligibility

Eligible applicants must be an accredited California school of nursing and approved by the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (for CNM programs) or the Midwifery Education Accreditation Council (for LM programs), or must be authorized by the Regents of the University of California, by the Trustees of the California State University, or must be approved by the Board of Registered Nursing.

Eligible existing midwifery programs may receive $13,000 per first-year student, with a maximum number of 14 students supported, for a maximum award amount of $182,000.

Eligible new midwifery programs may receive $75,000 per first-year student, with a maximum number of 3 students supported, for a maximum award amount of $225,000.

Applications for Certified Nurse Midwifery programs are due November 12, 2024. Applications for Licensed Midwifery programs are due December 5, 2024.
