The Social Work Education Capacity Expansion Program will provide funding to expand existing Master of Social Work (MSW) programs to educate and prepare additional MSW students who will provide clinical behavioral health services to children and youth through age 25. Projects should focus on meeting behavioral health workforce needs in California, specifically in underserved and rural communities.
Activities should include:
- Adding MSW student slots to an existing MSW program
- Recruiting culturally and linguistically diverse MSW students that reflect the socio-demographic and other characteristics of underserved communities
- Providing education and training in how to deliver culturally competent and linguistically appropriate behavioral healthcare
- Increasing the number of hours MSW students train with underserved groups, focused on delivering services to children and youth through age 25 and their caregivers, as well as others at risk of chronic behavioral health conditions
- Modifying or augmenting curriculum as necessary to incorporate SWECE guiding principles
- Supporting MSW students to seek clinical licensure
- Encouraging MSW graduates to work in organizations that serve underserved communities after completing educational requirements and receiving national certification
- Enabling MSW students to train in settings in which public behavioral health services are provided
Eligible applicants are California universities seeking to expand an existing MSW program that is already accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Field placements must be located in California.
Programs may receive funds to fill first year MSW positions, with a maximum of 25 admissions for all categories of added student slots. Amounts per filled first year positions for each eligible program type are as follows:
- $70,000 for full and part time students
- $40,000 for online only students
- 40,000 for one-year advanced standing students
