EPA Environmental Justice Thriving Communities Grantmaking Program Region 3 Sub-Grants
Green and Healthy Homes Initiative provides funding and technical assistance for environmental justice projects in disadvantaged communities in EPA Region 3. Disadvantaged communities are defined as areas where multiple factors, including both environmental and socioeconomic stressors, may act cumulatively to affect health and the environment and contribute to persistent environmental health disparities.
There are 3 types of grants.
- Tier 1: Assessment - Applicants in Tier 1 should have an identified environmental justice issue and a community of focus, but they are not expected to propose an intervention or solution to the issue.
- Tier 2: Planning - Applicants in Tier 2 should have an identified environmental justice issue and a community of focus, and they should be working with that community to lay the groundwork for an intervention and/or to involve and mobilize the community.
- Tier 3: Development - Applicants in Tier 3 should have an identified environmental justice issue and a community of focus, and have clearly defined implementation steps for an intervention that will impact the environmental justice issue.
Eligible applicants:
- Nonprofit organizations
- Community-based and grassroots nonprofit organizations
- Philanthropic and civic organizations with nonprofit status
- Tribal governments (both federally recognized and state-recognized) and intertribal consortia
- Native American organizations (includes Indian groups, cooperatives, nonprofit corporations, partnerships, and associations that have the authority to enter into legally binding agreements)
- Local governments (includes cities, towns, municipalities, and counties, public housing authorities, and councils of government)
- Institutions of higher education
Applicants must be located in, or providing services in, EPA Region 3.
Tier 1: Assessment
- Award ceiling: $150,000
- Project period: 1 year
Tier 2: Planning
- Award ceiling: $250,000
- Project period: 1-2 years
Tier 3: Development
- Award ceiling: $350,000
- Project period: 2 years
