The California Department of Public Health is offering funding to address commercial tobacco-related disparities affecting the American Indian population in California.
Program goals:
- Build capacity and skills among tribal members and staff employed by tribal governmental organizations to implement commercial tobacco use prevention and reduction interventions and provide health education services
- Mobilize and engage community residents and tribal governmental organizations to engage in commercial tobacco use prevention and cessation and support policy and system changes
- Design, support, adopt, implement, and evaluate tribal policy and system change campaigns that seek to prevent and reduce commercial tobacco use
Required grant activities:
- Demonstrate community support for the grant
- Coordinate with other local health programs, school-based programs, or voluntary health organizations
- Use and enhance existing services and resources
- Serve priority populations at high risk of starting tobacco use or developing tobacco-related illnesses
- Demonstrate an understanding of the role community norms have in influencing behavior change regarding tobacco use
- Develop and/or utilize promising or innovative approaches to diminishing tobacco use among priority populations and facilitate replication by others
Project types:
- Limit tobacco promoting influences
- Reduce exposure to secondhand smoke, tobacco smoke residue, tobacco waste, and other commercial tobacco products
- Reduce the availability of tobacco
- Promote tobacco cessation
Eligible applicants include federally recognized California tribal governments and tribal consortia.
Up to $800,000 over 51 months
