Purpose

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board offers loan repayment assistance for nurses that have been working in Texas for at least one year.

Funding priorities include:

  • Renewal applicants
  • Applicants working in rural areas
  • Work locations with higher primary care HPSA scores
  • RNs will have priority over LVNs, who will have priority over APRNs.

Eligibility

Eligibility criteria:

  • Have been working as a nurse in Texas for at least one year
  • Licensed by the Texas Board of Nursing as an LVN, RN, or APRN, with no restrictions
  • Loans are in good standing at the time of the application
  • Not have an existing service obligation for forgiveness through another program (excludes the State Loan Repayment Program)
  • Not be subject to repayment through another student loan repayment assistance program or loan forgiveness program or repayment assistance provided by an employer while participating in the program

Amount of funding

Award amounts per year for up to 3 years:

  • Licensed Vocational Nurses: $5,000
  • Registered Nurses: $9,000
  • Advanced Practice Registered Nurses: $16,000

Annual loan repayment assistance amounts must not exceed one third of the total principal and interest owed on eligible loans at the time of the initial application.
