The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) offers funding for patient-centered comparative clinical effectiveness research (CER) projects that focus on people with substance use disorders and/or individuals who use/misuse substances.
Examples of interventions include, but are not limited to:
- Screening
- Prevention
- Harm reduction
- Medication assisted treatment
- Contingency management
- Evidence-based behavioral interventions
- Digital therapeutics
- Recovery approaches for substance use/misuse or substance use disorder
- Comparison of different modes of intervention delivery
Special areas of interest include:
- Evidence-based strategies to advance equity in the prevention and treatment of substance use disorders
- Evidence-based interventions for overdose prevention
- Strategies to reduce nicotine and tobacco use in disproportionally affected populations
PCORI is specifically interested in applications focused on underrepresented and/or underresearched populations. Examples include, but are not limited to rural populations, low-income populations, sexual/gender minorities, racial/ethnic minorities, pregnant persons, those involved with the justice system, youth, older adults, and individuals with co-occurring mental and physical health conditions.
Eligible applicants include academic research, private sector research, and study-conducting entities. This may include, but is not limited to, agencies and instrumentalities of the federal government, nonprofit and for-profit research organizations, and colleges and universities.

Applicants must submit a letter of intent through the online system by June 4, 2024. Selected applicants will be invited to submit a full application, with a deadline of September 4, 2024.
