North Carolina High Needs Service Bonus (HNSB)

The HNSB program provides service bonuses for qualified providers in North Carolina without educational loan debt. Recipients must agree to provide comprehensive primary care services in eligible facilities serving high need patients in rural and underserved communities.
Recipients must agree to a 4 year service commitment.
Eligibility requirements:
- Employment start date is within 5 years of submitting the application
- Free of educational loan debt
- Have an unrestricted license to practice in North Carolina
- Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Accept Medicaid and Medicare
- Not currently under an existing service commitment
Eligible providers include:
- Primary care physicians (MD and DO)
- Family medicine
- General internal medicine
- General surgery (in Critical Access Hospitals only)
- Obstetrics/gynecology
- General Pediatrics
- Psychiatry
- Dentists
- Dental hygienists
- Nurse practitioners
- Physician assistants
- Certified nurse midwives
Award amounts:
- Up to $100,000 for physicians and dentists
- Up to $60,000 for nurse practitioners (including psychiatric), nurse midwives, physician assistants, and dental hygienists
