The West Virginia Rural Community Health Scholars is a program for health professions students in West Virginia that offers opportunities for hands-on training, experience in rural and underserved communities, and networking with other students and professionals.
The program requires a 2 year commitment and consists of classroom/online instruction and hands-on clinical training in addition to the regular coursework required by the degree program.
Core topic areas covered in the curriculum include:
- Interprofessional education
- Behavioral health integration
- Connecting communities and supporting health professionals
- Virtual learning and telehealth
- Social determinants of health
- Cultural competency
- Practice transformation
- Current and emerging health issues
Students should have an interest in rural or underserved healthcare and be currently enrolled in an eligible health professions degree or certificate program in West Virginia.
Specific health professions students are eligible to apply.

This program is provided at no cost to participating scholars. Benefits are described on the program website.
Participants will receive a $1,300 participation award.
