Health Equity Leaders Program

The Health Equity Leaders Program provides health professions students with opportunities to explore health equity service, scholarship, leadership, and policy.
The program is designed to develop future primary healthcare leaders with the knowledge, skills, and competencies to promote health equity for medically underserved communities.
Participants will complete:
- Virtual program orientation
- 5 in-person and virtual learning days
- 200 service learning hours
- Self-directed research
- Attendance at the American Public Health Association Annual Meeting and Expo
- A culminating event
Groups underrepresented in medicine include:
- African American/Black
- Hispanic/Latino
- American Indian/Alaska Native
- Asian American (Vietnamese and Cambodian only)
- Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander
Eligibility requirements:
- Proof of U.S. citizenship or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) approved letter
- Currently enrolled in an accredited medical, graduate-level nursing, or physician assistant school located in the U.S.
- Identification as an underrepresented student in healthcare
- Demonstrated leadership early in career
- Interest in healthcare delivery to medically underserved communities with a particular interest in primary care
- Commitment to health equity
Award ceiling: $10,000
Project period: 10 months
Estimated number of awards: 30
Stipends will be provided to both the project supervisor ($1,500) and the identified project site ($3,600).
