The New England Public Health Training Center provides stipends for public health and other health professions students with practice opportunities working on health equity projects with public health or primary care agencies.
Program objectives:
- Encourage students to work in the public health field
- Demonstrate the value of working in medically underserved and rural areas
- Increase student knowledge of health equity and the role of social determinants of health
- Improve student competency in one or more of the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals
Project types:
Field placements - Structured opportunities and experiences for students as they apply their acquired knowledge and skills working in a public health practice setting under the supervision of an experienced public health professional. Field placements contribute to the mastery of public health competencies with a focus on balancing the educational and practice needs of the students with the needs of the community.
Faculty/student collaborative projects - Placements involve research projects or community interventions identified by a governmental public health agency or other public health service entity where students and faculty advisors collaborate with the agency to enhance public health services to medically underserved communities and address specific public health issues among a specified target population.
Eligibility requirements:
- U.S. citizen or a non-citizen U.S. national or foreign national possessing a visa permitting permanent residence in the U.S.
- Currently enrolled as a graduate/doctoral student, or a 3rd/4th year undergraduate in a health field
- Have a health equity placement or project planned for the New England region
$3,500 stipends to help to defray living expense costs during the training experience. A total of 27 awards are given out each year, with 4-6 awards for each New England state.
There are three 8-12 week cohorts each fiscal year.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. For Summer, applications submitted before May 15 will have a priority review.
