Purpose

The Produce Prescription Pilot Program (P4) will provide funding to establish and demonstrate Produce Prescription Programs through collaborations with stakeholders from healthcare and food industries in tribal communities. Programs will help increase access to fruits, vegetables, and healthy traditional foods for American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) people by allowing eligible individuals to receive a fruit and vegetable voucher from a participating healthcare provider to redeem at a local market.

The goal of the pilot is to demonstrate and evaluate the impact of Produce Prescription Programs on AI/AN people and their families, specifically by:

  1. Reducing food insecurity
  2. Improving overall dietary health by increasing fruits, vegetables, and traditional food consumption
  3. Improving healthcare outcomes
Eligibility

Eligible applicants include:

  • Federally recognized tribes
  • Alaska Native villages, groups, and regional/village corporations
  • Tribal organizations
  • Urban Indian organizations

Award ceiling: $500,000
Award floor: $50,000 per year
Project period: 5 years
Estimated number of awards: 6-8
Estimated total program funding: $2,500,000
