Purpose

The Broadband Technical Assistance Program will provide funding to eligible entities to receive or deliver broadband technical assistance and training that promotes the expansion of broadband into rural areas.

Projects may include, but are not limited to:

  • Identifying public and private resources to finance broadband facilities
  • Preparing feasibility studies, financial forecasts, market surveys, environmental studies, and technical design information to support broadband services
  • Preparing reports and surveys necessary to document the need for broadband services, determine price ranges, and request financial assistance
  • Analyzing and improving broadband facilities management and operations, including implementing automation, adopting new software, conducting training, and determining efficiency

Eligibility

Eligible applicants include:

  • Federally-recognized tribes and tribal entities
  • State or local governments, including agencies and subdivisions
  • Territories or possessions of the United States
  • Institutions of higher education (including 1862 Land-Grant Institutions, 1890 Land-Grant Institutions, 1994 Land-Grant Institutions, Hispanic-Serving Institutions, and Historically Black Colleges and Universities)
  • Nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) status
  • Cooperatives and mutual organizations
  • Corporations
  • Limited Liability Companies and Limited Liability Partnerships

Projects must promote broadband expansion into a rural community.

Amount of funding

A total of $20,000,000 is available.

  • $15,000,000 for technical assistance providers. Awards will range between $100,000 - $1,000,000.
  • $10,000,000 for technical assistance recipients.0 Awards will range between $50,000 - $500,000.

The expected number of awards is 35.
