Expansion of Cancer Prevention Services to Rural and Medically Underserved Populations provides grant funding to coordinate and expand evidence-based prevention services and cancer screening for underserved and rural areas of Texas without adequate access to healthcare. The program establishes networks of local public health and community partners with the ability to tailor programs to meet the needs of their communities, focusing on cancers that cause the most burden in each community.
Grants are awarded for two project types:
- Initial expansion projects help existing programs to include additional types of prevention clinical services or expand current service into additional rural or underserved counties.
- Maintenance expansion projects substantially expand the amount of clinical services delivered in areas where the program is already operating. Expanding the types of clinical service or the geographic area served by the program is optional.
Priority consideration will be given to projects that serve geographic areas of the state disproportionately affected by cancer risk, incidence, or mortality, and projects that serve one or more of the following priority populations:
- Underinsured and uninsured individuals
- Medically unserved or underserved populations
- Racial, ethnic, and cultural minority populations
- Populations with low screening rates, high incidence rates, and high mortality rates, focusing on individuals never before screened or who are significantly out of compliance with nationally recommended screening guidelines
Eligible applicants are Texas-based entities with prevention projects currently or previously funded through the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas.
Award ceiling:
- $2,000,000 for Initial Expansion projects
- $2,500,000 for Maintenance Expansion projects
Project period
- Up to 36 months for Initial Expansion projects
- Up to 60 months for Maintenance Expansion projects
