Purpose

The Hermes Monato, Jr. Rural Health Essay Prize is an annual award for a rural health essay written by a student or recent graduate of any campus of the University of Wisconsin.

The winning essay will be about rural health with some of the following attributes:

  • Relevant to rural communities
  • Innovative
  • Practical
  • Multi‐disciplinary
  • Improves quality of care
  • Team/relationship oriented
  • Applicability to networking, cooperatives
  • Improves the local economy

There are no requirements for length or format. Winning papers have ranged from first person essays to formal, journal ready articles. Papers already written for a class or other purposes during the previous 12 months are eligible for the competition.

Eligibility

The prize is open to anyone who has been a student at the University of Wisconsin within the preceding year. This includes all campuses, programs, undergraduate, graduate, resident, fellows, part-time, and non‐degree students.
