Purpose

The Washington J-1 Visa Waiver Program offers a J-1 Visa waiver to foreign physicians who commit to serving for 3 years in an underserved area of Washington, waiving the foreign medical residency requirement and allowing them to remain in the United States. The program is intended to provide physician services in areas which typically have difficulty attracting and retaining physicians.

Primary care physicians, psychiatrists, and specialty trained physicians are eligible to apply.

This is an incentive program that offers foreign physicians a visa waiver, allowing them to work in the U.S.

Application process

Links to additional guidance and the application are available on the program website. The program website also includes an up-to-date table of pending and approved waivers for the current cycle.

Completed applications should be emailed to J1VisaWaiver@doh.wa.gov.

The first application review period is October 1 - October 15, 2024. If waiver slots are still available, the second application review period is November 15, 2024 - September 1, 2025.
