The Utah Conrad State 30 J-1 Visa Waiver Program offers a J-1 Visa waiver to foreign physicians who commit to serving for 3 years in a federally designated Primary Care Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) in Utah, waiving the foreign medical residency requirement and allowing them to remain in the United States. The program is intended to provide physician services in areas that typically have difficulty attracting and retaining physicians.
Priority is given to physicians who practice in primary care, including family practice, obstetrics, gynecology, internal medicine, pediatrics, and psychiatry.
Utah only uses Heath Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs), not medically underserved areas or medically underserved populations (MUA/MUP) designations to consider employment sites eligible for J-1 visa waiver placements. Check a facility's HPSA designation.
Requests will also be considered for specialists and sub-specialists practicing in NON-HPSA designated areas, if the employment site meets flex slot requirements.
This is an incentive program that offers foreign physicians a visa waiver, allowing them to work in the U.S.
Links to additional guidance and a submission checklist are available on the program website.
