The Mississippi Rural Physicians Scholarship Program offers a scholarship to rural medical school students in Mississippi who agree to practice in underserved rural areas of Mississippi for at least 4 years upon completion of their degree.
The program is designed for students currently residing in rural areas of Mississippi who wish to return to those areas to practice medicine. Students are mentored throughout the program, from undergraduate to initial practice support.
Applicants must be a legal resident of Mississippi from a rural background and plan to practice in a rural or medically underserved community in Mississippi upon completion of his/her degree program.
Applicants must also plan to complete an internship/residency program in one of the following primary care specialties:
- Family medicine
- Pediatrics
- General internal medicine
- Obstetrics-gynecology
Applications may be submitted by undergraduates in either their sophomore or junior years. Admitted or currently attending medical students are also eligible to apply.
Scholarships cover the cost of tuition and a portion of the student's instructional materials and living expenses. Amounts are as follows:
- $30,000 per year for undergraduate applicants
- $35,000 per year medical student applicants
Undergraduate applicants may be eligible to receive Early Assurance for admission to UMMC School of Medicine. Additional benefits for undergraduate and medical student applicants are described on the program website.

The application window for undergraduate applicants is September 1 to February 1. The deadline medical student applicants is May 1.
