Indian Health Service Dental Externships provide an opportunity for dental students to gain professional experience, as well as to determine whether a career with the Indian Health Service (IHS) Division of Oral Health or a position at a specific IHS or Tribal site would be a career path of interest.
Most externships require a commitment of 2-4 weeks between May 1 – September 30.
Externships are available for dental students between their third and fourth years of school within the months of May through September.
Covers the following travel expenses, up to $2,000:
- Airfare, which is deducted from the budgeted expenses
- Lodging (at government rates) when free housing is not available
- A per diem for miscellaneous expenses
Students must be prepared to cover the travel costs (other than airfare) related to the externship. Reimbursement will be paid upon completion of travel.
According to the program website:
"The 2024 application cycle for the Class of 2025 will not be available at this time. The Class of 2026 is encouraged to join the Dental Recruitment listserv to receive the latest updates about the IHS Dental Externship as it returns in January 2025."
