New Estimates Show Population Recovered for Large Cities and Grew in Small Places on Outskirts of Urban Areas in 2023

The Census Bureau's July 1, 2023 population estimates for cities and towns show geographic shifts in population growth compared to July 1, 2019 estimates. Many cities with populations under 50,000 saw higher growth rates in 2023 than in 2019, while large cities generally grew more slowly. The fastest-growing cities are in the South, with small towns in the area having the highest growth rate among all small towns in the U.S.
